Fourteen of us enjoyed a crisp, sunny day hiking in Hald-Strawberry Park. We entered from the Logan Drive cul-de-sac to climb up 66 wooden stairs to the TID ditch trail. We climbed the trail to the top area with a commemorative bench and captured our group picture. Then, we descended down and around the other side of the hill to head east on the ditch trail. We followed it to the quasi-end up above Lithia Park, having passed a road, a driveway, and a few spur trails down to Granite Street.
While on the ditch trail, we observed silence to listen to our surroundings. Not ideal with road and machine noises, but pleasant none-the-less. At this end, we climbed up to a relatively open area to perch where we could enjoy a rest and conversation, seeing a flock of turkeys on the way up.
While enjoying snacks, Allison surprised and delighted us by reading some passages from a book she’s discovered about women walking: Wanderers: The History of Women Walking, by Kerri Andrews. It is a collection of writings by the women about their walks (i.e. a couple by Virginia Wolfe), and the author’s contribution about each of the women. Note: The book is in the Ashland Library. Then we returned back down the hillside and returned on the ditch trail to the stairs down to Logan Drive.
We hiked 3.6 miles with 500’ of elevation gain.
