Wildflower Walk to Little Pilot Peak 5-3-19

Photos by Steve Stark and Rich Stickle

As the stalwart seven - LeslieD, Rich, Steve, Sabin, Denise, John(!) and I - headed up the first dry sandy hill of the Little Pilot Peak hike we were met with hundreds of tiny Klamath fawn lilies, one of many new species (to us) we were to discover that morning.  They grow to only about 4 inches, so you really had to get down on your knees to see them, but they rewarded the effort with jewel-like beauty.  Continuing up the trail onto the rocky outcrops we discovered a treasure trove of mostly new flowers along with fabulous views of the valley below and mountains beyond. Among the new finds on the exposed slope were Dagger pod, Yellow bell (a tiny yellow fritillary), Western spring beauty, and Martindale's desert parsley along with old friends Grass widow and Hall's or Gray's (there was a discussion) desert parsley.

Heading into the forest we spied small Western trillium and Milks maid/Toothwort.  We encountered a fair amount of snow heading up the trail, and finally decided to not risk any more slipping and sliding. We stopped for a snack at the top of the huge meadow sloping downhill with hundreds of corn lilies beginning to push up, and a wonderful view of Mt. Ashland. Back at the cars, we decided to extend the hike a bit toward Hobart Bluff and were glad we did because we found another new flower, the sweet little Oregon anemone along with Shleton's violet, more Milk maids and Snow queen.  The list was short, but we were pretty excited about the number of completely new flowers we found.  We headed back down 66 where most of the crew had things to attend to, but John, Denise and I did stop at Caldera for refreshment.

Respectfully submitted, Liz Flower Floozy
