Rich, Darryl, Sunny, Sabin, Mary and I headed up to Grizzly Peak Wednesday this past week in search of blooming Tower delphiniums. We saw a few, but the vast majority were not quite in bloom. Pretty darn close though, so don't wait too long with these hot days. We were not disappointed however, because there was LOTS of flowers to keep us busy, including a personal favorite, which Sunny dubbed "Witch's Hat Wild Ginger." Once you see them, you'll know why. But, you've got to get down on all fours and search under the shiny heart-shaped leaves for the maroon flowers, which are pollinated by slugs!
We headed back down after spying the wild ginger and drove down Shale City Road to the turn-off to (Francie's) Hidden Falls trail, which was nice and green and also full of flowers. We had lunch at the falls overlook and then headed home.
Next week will be the final Wednesday Wildflower Walk for the season. We'll end it on a high note with the always rewarding "Garden Bowl" walk along the PCT to Grouse Gap. You can look forward to more blooming Tower delphiniums as well as the Columbian monkshood, which gives the delphiniums a real run for their money. Hope to see you then!
