Sunny, Mike, Sabin, Jean, Rich, Elisabeth and I all agreed that Enchanted Forest lived up to its name on this beautiful sunny Friday.  We barely made it through the gate before we were greeted with THOUSANDS of Indian warriors armed with THOUSANDS of tall Shooting stars under the pines.   With cries of delight, we walked and stared and took pictures as more and more vistas of flowers unfolded before us. Let's just say forward momentum was minimal there for awhile.

In betwixt the incredible displays of pink and red were dozens and dozens of Pussy's ears/Tolmei's mariposa lily (Sunny's favorite!),  Woodland star, Western buttercup, Miners lettuce, Milk maids/Toothwort, Hounds tongue, Shelton's violet and Prairie violet (a new one for me).  As we headed up the trail through the meadow we saw Henderson's saxifrage, Purple larkspur/Delphinium, Blue dicks and three different species of lomatium -- Hall's desert parsley, California celery leaf, and Nineleaf biscuitroot.  Buckbrush ceonothus, Whiteleaf manzanta, and Madrone were also in bloom.

Then we were back in the forest along a rushing stream that Sabin discovered disappeared underground for a hundred feet or more at least twice along our path.  There we found HUNDREDS of Giant white wakerobin/Trillium. In amongst them were Hooker's fairybells, Henderson's fawn lily (on their way out), and Western waterleaf,  Fendler's waterleaf, and Starry salomon seal just beginning to flower. In the midst of all the profusion, Rich spotted one lone Scarlett fritiillary/Red bell up the slope from our lunch spot that Sunny heroically scaled to take a picture.  We opted to stay on the forest trail rather than heading up to the memorial because we couldn't just leave the trilliums.  We headed back to Ashland without stopping for refreshment but satisfied with our wildflower bounty.

Cheers, Liz
