Summit Sno-Park 2-22-17

We started in 30 degree weather with partly cloudy skies.  The trail was untouched by anyone and the scenery was spectacular.  The hike up to the lunch spot was in perfect weather (felt like 40 degrees), with 5 to 7 inches of new soft snow on top of a 50+ inch base.  Some of the hikers did a yoga pose in honor of our “on staff” yoga instructor.

We decided to do the loop CCW today and it was interesting to note how you see different things when you go in the opposite direction. We noticed a Forest Service explanatory sign below the Summit Twin Mass Selection Tree Plantation which we had not noticed in the past. Turns out that the tree plantation of Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pines which is now 18 years old was developed with "bulked" seeds which are seeds grown and harvested in the same spot over many years to optimize characteristics such as cold resistance or insect resistance at a particular location.

Lunch was taken in a nice open area, under mostly blue skies.  However, as we headed out on the second half of this loop trail, a cold front moved in and the temperature dropped a good 5+ degrees and the snow began to fall.  After a mile some of the group were wondering what we were doing in the middle of nowhere in a heavy snow storm.  Soon the trail was 14 inches of heavy, untracked snow and it was more work than expected.  Fortunately we met two late arrivers working their way up the end of the trail, so we had a nice broken trail to follow the last 1 ½ mile back to the cars.

Refreshments were taken at the Buffalo Wings Restaurant and we were graced with an appearance by Hank Morgan.  It was a good hike and great day.
