With the recent end of the ski season, we moved up our hike on Mt. Ashland while there was still some snow remaining. There was no need for snowshoes, but Yaktrax and spikes helped to negotiate the icy patches.
We had an enthusiastic crowd of 18 hikers and welcomed back Randy and Linda.
It was a beautiful sunny day with mild temperatures in the 50s and no wind.
There were many wonderful views of Mt. Shasta to the south, and Mt. McLoughlin to the northeast.
One more run of the snow plows should clear FS20 and open the road for vehicles driving out to Grouse Gap.
The group hiked up the road and took in a view of Rabbit Ears on the way up to the Soccer Ball summit for lunch and lots of views.
The hike was 5 miles RT with 900' of gain.
Thanks to Jerry and Nurse Lisa for watching out for me as I struggled with a weak heart up the road. We settled down at a picnic table in the Mt. Ashland campground and viewed Shasta during lunch, and waited for the rest of the group to return from the summit for our group photo.
Happy Trails,
Rich
