Moon Prairie 12-30-15

Photos by Bev and Dan

DIM was in relatively good shape; plowed, snow covered but sanded on the hilly sections. It looked like the Deadwood Sno-Park had not been plowed since Sunday, so there was about 6" of soft snow on top of the plowed out area. We managed to find a parking spot on the corner of the Sno-Park and DIM, and out of the way of any potential plowing, which didn't happen today anyway.

We had first tracks today, which was surprising, since it hasn't snowed here since the weekend. We had a bit of a snow-whack at the start as we tried to find the trail. On the southward leg along Moon Prairie Road we had a nice soft 6" of snow on top of a two or three foot Sno-Cat groomed base.

We missed the turn at Hoxie Creek and continued on NF-3831 for about 400' before noticing our error and going back and making the turn. After we made the turn we lost the benefit of the Sno-Cat grooming and began breaking trail in about a foot of soft snow. We continued to enjoy this deeper snow until we rejoined the track that we had made earlier on the way down.

About 1/3 of the way up the loop we decided to stop for lunch on a sunny log. Unfortunately, there wasn't any log in the first 2' or 3' of apparently snow covered log so we each made our own snow throne to enjoy a quick lunch.

We enjoyed a windless day with the temperature hovering around freezing and a with mix of full sun, hazy sun and clouds. We abstained from refreshments after the hike today.
