We started the hike at the Aspen Point campground, but the High Lakes trail was so rough and sometimes lacking snow cover that we soon went out onto the lake. We alternated between walking on the lake and along the shoreline for 2.25 miles.
Snow was quite deep in places, both on the lake and on the shore, so breaking trail was a chore. The snow was wet--snowball snow, Betty called it--but not crusty. On the way back Alex made his usual wrong turn and ended up on the High Lakes trail instead of following the group's tracks back onto the lake. He had to do a rather strenous bit of bushwacking in deep snow among the trees to get back on track and catch up with the others.
On the way back we checked out Lake of the Woods resort, since their sign said "Open on Weekends". Unfortunately the weekend had not yet started, so we had to wait till Ashland to get our beer fix at the Standing Stone.
