Above Hyatt and Howard Prairie Lakes Snowshoe 2-1-17

This was my first extemporaneous hiking day.  Since we only had one car (5 people), we started from Keeley’s Hyatt Lake House and headed up to the ridge between Hyatt and Howard Prairie. First, south on East Hyatt Lake road.  After about 1/4 mile, we turned left and headed northeast up a snow bound road to the top of the hill.  At this point, we headed north through the trees to a lookout viewpoint, where we could see from Mt. Bachelor (128 miles away), Mt. Thielsen (68 miles) and Mt. McLoughlin (18 miles), to Howard Prairie reservoir.  Then we continued back to the road, following it until we found the PCT, when we headed southwest.

At some point on the hike, we decided that we would hike to the top of the knob of rock above the PCT for lunch.  Keeley took the direct route, while John found a more reasonable path.  We could see Mt. Shasta (56 miles) and Mt. Ashland (17 miles).  Yes, all the detailed distance info is from Dan, Chairman Emeritus of the Board.  After lunch we headed back down to Lake Hyatt and enjoyed a flat hike along the lake and back to the house for refreshments.

I think all enjoyed this tiring, but fun hike and agreed we should do it again.
