Grouse Gap Snowshoe 12-11-13

Photos and Tracks by Ron and Dan

Our first snowshoe of the season was Hot Hot Hot. It was 34oF when we arrived at the TH but it quickly warmed up to 45oF under a merciless sun. We followed the cat track from the back Mt. Ashland parking lot along FS 20 and then up FS 20A to the ridge where we left the road and followed the ridge above Rabbit Ears westward. The cat had compacted the snow down to 3" to 4" but it certainly made the hike up to the ridge easier. Once on the ridge we had 6" to 8" of very nice powder which we enjoyed for the rest of the snowshoe until we got back to the FS 20 / FS 20A junction.

Nice views along the ridge top from Mt. Shasta to Mt. Bachelor on what turned out to be a very clear day. We had lunch on the log and rocks above the Grouse Gap shelter enjoying the views in the warm sunshine. After lunch we headed back along the road.

We stopped at Callahan's on the way back where we splurged on an order of truffle fries in addition to the more modestly priced regular fries.
