Fish Lake 1-6-16

We went up 62 and 140 today and the roads were in good shape. Temperatures ranged from the mid-30s to the high 30s. Plenty of snow on the ground. In fact, as we were doing our usual wandering around at the start of the snowshoe we passed a guy clearing about 5' of snow from the roof of one of the cabins.

We met a group of skiers from Medford and Grants Pass in the Sno-Park parking lot and started out together to head up to Lollipop. They were trail breaking in a faint pair of ski tracks and we were breaking new track beside them in 6" to 8" of crispy snow on top of a good base. We managed to exchange the lead with them several times as they were having equipment problems and falling on the short downhills.

Once we hit the ridge on Lollipop both groups stopped together for lunch. The high haze that we had enjoyed in the morning gradually gave way to solid overcast and then to light snow by the end of lunch. Twenty minutes later we were in a full-on snowstorm.

We took the Sucker's Alley shortcut and now have a much better understanding of why it is so named. There were plenty of deadfall down through there with lots of opportunities to drop into a well while trying to get around or over them. We lost the trail several times along there and found the GPS quite useful in getting back on track.

Refreshments were taken at Four Daughters.
