Deadwood Snowshoe 2-20-19

Eight of us headed up DIM to attempt the Deadwood snowshoe loop hike.  The weather forecast was for lots of snow and wind, so this was going to be an adventure.  We arrived at the Snow Park area located at the intersection of DIM and Highway 37 and noticed that it had not yet been plowed.  With some concern, we drove into the parking area that had 6 to 8 inches of fresh snow.

After putting on our snowshoes, we headed NE to the Daley Creek campground at about the 2 mile mark.  We then turned right and headed up a hill, which was covered with over 2 feet of fresh, soft snow, a lot more than the previous 2 miles.

Getting to the top of the hill took a lot of effort, with everyone taking turns breaking trail.  By the time we reached the 2.5 mile mark we decided to stop for lunch.  The trees provided some cover from the snow fall.  Given the weather and cold temperatures, we took a short lunch and decided not to complete the loop along the remaining 2.5 miles, covered with way too much untracked snow.  So we retraced our broken trail back to the cars.  During our hike, the weather was variable with partial sun, then snowing very hard, then calm, then repeat.

The scenery was incredible, walking through the forest with all the snow covered trees and fields.  It was a good hike, but we were all glad to be back in Ashland.  Refreshments were taken at Caldera.
