It feels like Spring in Ashland but it is still a winter playground above 4,500’ in the Siskiyous. Ten of us strapped on snowshoes and launched from the Deadwood Sno-park at the intersection of Indian Memorial (DIM) and FS 37. FS 37 was freshly groomed with a 12’ wide trail. That grooming erased the sled dog paw tracks that we had seen days earlier on the scouting trip.
We trekked steadily along FS 37 passing the ditch trail and tall conifers with hanging moss. Around 2 miles in we came to Daley Creek, which flows underneath the road. We heard the creek before we saw glimpses of the water that is covered by fallen logs and snow. We turned down into the Daley Creek Campground and sat on snow-covered stumps along the creek for lunch. This is such a tranquil spot with bubbling creek sounds.
The sun was bright and warm for the return trip. On the return a red-breasted nuthatch called. It was sunny and warm – just like being at a California beach, but with snow rather than sand.
Round-trip: 4 miles, 200’ elevation gain.
