Crater Lake 3-25-15

Photos by Bob W. and Dan

We had pretty solid overcast in the morning morphing into hazy sunshine after lunch. The temperatures stayed in the 40s but when the sun came out it felt quite warm without any wind, particularly when we were going up slight inclines.

Snow cover was about 2' in most places, but the occasional drift was over our heads. New snow since the weekend was probably less than 6" which combined with the low base snow pack had led the park service to plow West Rim Drive as far as North Junction in hopes of opening the North Entrance for Spring Break.

We walked bare pavement over to Discover Point where we put on our snowshoes to continue heading west. The trees were shedding their icy frosting so we decided to stay in open areas to avoid falling chunks. We had lunch at the point where the PCT meets the lake, but we stayed behind the tree-line instead of heading out to the point, which we have done in the summer.

We enjoyed refreshment sitting down by the river at the Rogue River Lodge.
