Ten of us headed up to Crater Lake to enjoy one of the best snowshoe hikes in Southern Oregon. We decided to drive up Highway 140 because it had been snowing most of Tuesday on DIM. As we hit the snow zone, the traffic stopped. After 10 minutes, Barry H decided to hike up to see what was happening. Within about 3 minutes, traffic started moving again (Yea), but no Barry was in sight. As we passed the stalled truck, Barry was on the right side of the road, directing traffic, so we could get by. As we passed, he crossed the road, jumped in the car and off we went to Crater Lake with no more delays.
The weather was prefect at Crater Lake. Very few clouds, temperatures in the high 20’s and lots of snow. We headed up the trail, which is about 1.5 miles each way, walking through trees covered with snow, an avalanche zone and finally up to the rim of the crater. The wind was very cold when we did reach the rim, but perfect until then. After enjoying the spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, we ducked down behind the lodge where there was no wind and lots of sun. We enjoyed our lunch and were visited by several Gray Jays, also know as Camp Robbers, who provided some entertainment.
Of special note - during the hike, it was decided that Francie should be promoted to Vice Hike Leader to help me find some new hikes and cover during some of my time away. We also promoted Liz to Social Chairman, replacing Francie in her past role. Liz’s first decision was to direct us all to Becky’s on our way home for refreshments, which turned out to be a perfect place to refuel our bodies (lots of berry pie and ice cream).
This hike is the best snowshoe hike in our portfolio, but it is a long drive (2 hours), so the weather has to be perfect. All had a great time and we consider ourselves lucky to have the good weather and snow.
