On Wednesday we had 13 people come out to snowshoe at Crater Lake National Park. We parked near the lodge but we were not able to go up the snow bank there because heavy equipment was removing snow. We walked a bit farther along the parking area then found a place to climb up and start our snowshoe along the rim.
The sky was mostly blue and there were a few clouds. To look at the lake and see the reflections was amazing. We could see Mount Thielsen in the distance. The snow was well packed because many people have been traveling on it throughout the year.
As we moved along, we could see Mount Scott across Crater Lake. If we looked to our left we could see Mount McLoughlin and Union Peak. With the snow on Union Peak, you could really see just how steep it is.
We traveled along and came to our lunch spot where we had a perfect view of the lake. We took a long break before we headed back. Many of us reapplied sunscreen as it was a day you could easily get a sunburn.
As we headed back, we could turn around and see The Watchman and the lookout tower on the top. Also Bob pointed out that you could see The Phantom Ship. I zoomed my camera in and was able to get a decent shot of it.
Most of us exited the snow at East Rim Drive and walked between some heavy equipment that was not in use. Then we walked along the road back to our cars. We had snowshoed 4.21 miles and gained 350 feet of elevation.
Two cars drove towards Fort Klamath to go home and 2 cars drove down Highway 62 so we could stop at Phil's Frosty for ice cream. It was a perfect day!
