Bull Gap Crest Loop Snowshoe 12-19-12

An uneventful drive to the TH. The ski road was snow covered, but plowed and sanded. Temperatures were in the low 20s.

We decided to do the Bull Gap loop instead of the scheduled snowshoe to Grouse Gap because it was already quite windy and the forecast was for gusts as high as 45 MPH. Turned out to be a good decision; we only had a bit of wind for the last 1/2 mile or so. Otherwise, it was windless with a high overcast.

On the outbound we followed old cross country ski tracks that had 4" to 6" of new snow on them. The skiers turned around at the low point so we enjoyed first tracks in 18" to 24" of fairly soft snow from there on up to the road. Breaking trail on the long uphill was quite character building.

At the viewpoint we had a nice view of the base of Mt. McLoughlin which is about 32 miles northeast.

We were back at Standing Stone by 1:00 PM for lunch.
