It was a perfect day for a snowshoeing trek at Buck Prairie. Eleven of us snowshoed the single track up to the intersection of three trails and took the middle route further in and up to our familiar and favorite overlook eastward to the mountain range. A map of the entire Buck Prairie Winter Trails System (BLM) is available at the map sign near the parking lot.
Not surprising, given our unusually heavy snowfall in the Rogue Valley and thus the surrounding mountains, we reveled in the thick snow cover, even covering all but the tip of the cattle guard gate. There were cross country ski tracks, but we broke trail for snowshoeing the full distance to our mountain views. Credit goes to Kay, Socorro, Nancy, and Kate – our intrepid trail breakers.
On this beautiful sunny day with clear skies, we enjoyed a full view of Mt. McLoughlin, Brown Mountain, and the range as far as the rim of Crater Lake and we believe also Mt. Thielsen. The temperature was mild, with no significant wind, allowing us to settle down in a row on the snow bank enjoying the view and chatting, much like a flock of birds lined up on a wire enjoying their perch. We returned the same way, for a trek of about 3 miles RT with moderate elevation gain.
