Fresh powder at Buck Prairie made for perfect snowshoeing conditions. Jack, who snowshoes with his wife Lynn twice or more a week during the season, said that these conditions were top notch. What made them so special was the silence of our snowshoes trekking across the fresh snow with no crunching sounds. Remarkable especially with a robust group of 15.

While we saw two cross-country tracks and greeted a dozen XC skiers, we broke the snowshoe trail. Much gratitude to those who took turns breaking the trail: Alison, Jack, Kay, Bonnie, and Sue. It’s hard work. We took the middle fork after arriving at the intersection with outhouse, continuing up to the first open lookout. Being a mostly clear day, we could see Mt. McLoughlin, Brown Mountain, and event Pelican Butte and part of Mt. Thielsen. No matter how many times over the years we have taken this route, it is a joy to behold each time.

It was Elisabeth’s birthday. Liz rallied the group in the parking area for a moment of celebration and shared yummy lemon-poppy seed scones. Elisabeth said that spending this day in this place with this group of friends made it very special. We had snowshoed 3 miles RT with an elevation gain of about 450’.

We hope to snowshoe again next week if snow conditions are suitable. The announcement will be delayed until Wednesday or Thursday to evaluate the snow and road conditions.
