Upper Rogue - Peyton Bridge NE to Hurd Creek 1-26-22

Photos by Barry, Francie and Keeley

Twelve of us converged at the trail head and headed northeast up the Rogue River under clear skies and a very cold breeze.  The trail at the beginning was in good shape but some of us were worried that all the downfall we had experienced last year might not have been cleared.

A large tree had been recently cut so things were looking good for the first 2 miles.  We hit the normal “turn around here” sign of arrows, but it being Wednesday, we continued.  Soon we did hit some downfall and at several points we needed to get down on all fours to get through.  However, it was much easier than last year so most of us were pleased.

John K had brought pruning shears to cut back a bunch of the blackberry vines that were trying their best to make sure we did not proceed, so that was a big help on the return trip.  Most of the bridges were in good shape but one had been hit hard by a tree.  It was still strong so no problem to cross the creek.  We did see several waterfalls which were great to see and hear.

Lunch was taken near the Hurd Creek crossing.  We were all in the sun and had a very leisurely lunch.  Finally it was time to head back to the cars and home.  Some of the group stopped at Phil’s Frosty for a snack on the way home.  It was a good hike with some challenging sections under perfect weather for being outside.
