Ashland Hiking Home

On Wednesday we had 9 people come out to hike from Woodruff Bridge out to Takelma Gorge and Knob Falls. It was already 77° when we started our hike a little bit after 10 AM. We headed down river under the cover of shade from the trees. It was very lush with growth, so it felt a bit muggy.

We saw a wild ginger with the uncommon green flower and a few other wildflowers still blooming. We thought it was amazing to see the water so calm in some places and so rough and wild in other places.

After hiking around 1.5 miles we came to the Takelma Gorge. We could see logs that we believe had been washed up and placed up on rocks when the river flow was higher. There is a large cross on the rock wall across from our viewing spot. When we came home, I did some investigating and found out it is a tribute to a boy who was 2 weeks before his 5th birthday and was killed in a rafting accident on that corner. We had all said it was not a section of the Rogue River any of us would raft.

We turned around and headed back to our cars and had our lunch at one of the picnic tables and enjoyed the water at Woodruff Bridge.

After Lunch, we headed farther upstream for around 1.75 mile. As we walked along, it felt like the temperature was cooler. We were still in shade and the trees were not as dense near the trail. When we came to Knob Falls, some of us went down to get a closer view. Two of the hikers had never seen it before.

We then headed back to our cars and it was around 2 PM. We had hiked 7.13 miles and had 446 feet of gain. We decided to stop at Phil's Frosty in Shady Cove for ice cream. A great way to cool off.
