Taylor Creek 8-6-21

A look at the AirNow site showed the best way to avoid smoke was to head west, so we did. We arrived at Road 25 west of Merlin to clear air at 71 degrees, with a bright sun.  We left a shuttle car at the first TH and headed up to Road 2509 and the Lone Pine TH. There was a lot of fire damage higher up, but not as bad as one might expect. Trees often were burned up to 25 feet and green at the top.The parking lot at mile 9 was the dividing line between burnt and pristine. Everything was green on the uphill side and all the rush and deadfall had been piled up for later disposal.

So we descended initially through a burned out forest but on the way down there were large areas undamaged, with lots of shade. On the way down we were impressed by the fantastic work the Southern Oregon Trail Alliance had done on restoration. The trail was in great shape and there are plentiful new signs with detailed maps. Have a look at their website. China Creek Rehab / Taylor Creek Cleanup - (sotrails.org) They get various unrelated groups to volunteer their members for work, from trail runners to motorcycle clubs. Absolutely first class.

Mike LeTourneau pointed out a piece of placer mining equipment along the way and the website talks about how they cleaned up the old mining site and some squatter sites. They had a huge number of volunteers and the trail shows it. The bridges are also all in perfect condition.

For those who think of this as a downhill walk, there were plenty of high hills to climb, and a killer at the end, I was wondering if the trail had changed in the last two miles as there seemed to be more ascent than I remembered.

It grew hotter near the end after we left the shaded forest portion and we were glad to finish. It called for celebration and we stopped by Baldinis for refreshments after a great day of hiking.
