Lower Rogue 10-17-16

Photos by Jeff, John, Mike and Rich

Seven determined hikers braved the elements to hike the Lower Rogue. It poured all the way to Merlin then let up as we approached the trailhead. None of us had ever seen the river so high. Nancy Driscoll made the wise suggestion that we park up the hill a bit and facing away from the river. Who knows how the level can change? The water was only a foot or two below the parking lot.

The views were magnificent with waterfalls coming off the cliffs across the river and making their way down for hundreds of feet. We had to deal with several crossings of waterfalls but nothing more risky than getting a wet foot. The water was surging over the rocks and we saw a few experts on rafts shooting the rapids at high speed. We had lunch at Whisky Creek with the rain gone and then made our way back, hop scotching through the water obstacles again. Rich and Jeff did a noble job of scouting out the obstacles and helping everyone through.

Note that Whiskey Creek was a torrent and the question was answered as to why the new bridge over it was built so high. We could see where the old one had been and it wouldn't have been much above the water. We considered going on to Alder Creek but realized the rocks where we usually eat would probably be below water.

The scenery made it all worth it and our happy crew stopped in Merlin for refreshments. A great day was had by all.
