Lower Rogue - Grave Creek to Whiskey Creek 5-2-14

Due to conflicting data regarding departure time, two people got left behind and had to content themselves with a hike on Grizzly Peak. The remaining four packed into Alex's brand new vehicle for the ride to the trailhead.

Parking lot at Graves Creek was jammed with boat trailers, and on the return portion of our hike we saw a steady flow of rafters and some kayakers making their way downstream.

Weather started out cool but was pretty warm by the time we returned to our vehicles. A first--and last--time hiker either failed to see the rest of the group waiting for him at Whiskey Creek or else ignored us. Some rafters informed us that he had talked to them on the way out, so we didn't have to worry about him.

There was a spectacular display of Golden Iris along much of the trail, especially after the downhill spur to Rainey Falls. Most streams were dry or nearly so, the exceptions being China Gulch and Whisky Creek. We bypassed the cabin and continued some 1/2 mile to a luch spot overlooking the river, so that Darryl would get a chance to see an otter. Unfortunately, Lynn had left his stuffed otter in the Safeway lot, so Darryl had to be content with a few Mallards.

On the way back we dropped off Charlene outside her house in Gold Hill and wandered around on country roads for some 20 minutes before we found our way back to the freeway. No good deed goes unpunished.

All in all, it was a great day."
