Lower Rogue - Grave Creek to Whisky Creek 10-14-19

Photos by Bob, John E. and Nanci

Fall days in Southern Oregon are special and a joy to be out on the trail. The crispness of early morning yields to the warmth of Autumn afternoons. Cool temps at 10 am gave us extra energy as we started out along the cliffs down the river. The weather was calm and eventually the morning clouds burned off replaced by bright skies.

We ten hiked at an active pace and reached the Whiskey Creek lunch spot at 11:30. Since we were early, we followed Betty's suggestion and went up a side trail across the bridge to explore the Whiskey Creek Cabin. The homestead of Lou Martin a gold prospector and a talented carpenter proved very interesting to our group of hikers. Besides a two room log cabin, Lou had a food storage room, chicken coop, shower, out house, tool shed, and outdoor cover for fire wood and livestock. He also dug a ditch, like the Sterling mine, so he could pan for gold!

Along the Rogue we saw first 5 guided boats with 2 fishermen each, then 2 kayaks followed by 9 rafts. It was a very pleasant day.

Since we finished the hike at 1:45, one car load decided to stop in Merlin at Baldini's for refreshments.

Remember next Monday you are invited to join us out on the coast for our overnight. We'll do the Coastal trail to view the mouth of the Klamath River. We'll stay over at the Curly Redwood Lodge and Tuesday we'll hike the cliffs above Whales Head beach north of Brookings.
