PCT - Etna Summit to Taylor Lake Overlook 7-14-21

Four of us headed to Etna Summit to hike to the Taylor Lake overlook.  Smoke was in the air and we all were concerned about the possible rising smoke levels.  When we arrived at the trailhead it was 72 degrees and the air was marginal.  However, we all decided to continue our plan of hiking to the overlook, so up we went.

All of us were grateful to get to the forest which give us a break from the sun.  As we continued to hike, the air got cleaner, partially due to the altitude and partially due to a breeze that started to show its face.

Along the way we pasted 11 PCT hikers.  Most started in Mexico and looked the part.  We made it to the overlook and took a short break, then back up to the Smith Lake overlook where we took our lunch.  We noticed one person floating in the lake, which is a long ways down from the trail.

Finally we headed back to the car and down to Dotty’s, which is open again and we all had ice cream in one form or another.  While eating our ice cream in 98 degree weather outside in the shade, fire trucks started heading east of Etna.  We all thought another fire had started but turns out it was a false alarm – some logging operation was making a lot of dust.
