PCT Etna Summit to the Smith Lake Overlook 7-2-21

Photos by Sunny

For several years I have wanted to adapt this hike from Etna Summit for moderate hikers. This week the smoke situation led us to cancel the Cement Bluff hike and I bet on Etna Summit being far enough away from the fire. It paid off. For a while it looked like the smoke was following us but when we arrived at the Summit the air was crystal clear.

None of the group, aside from yours truly, had done the hike before and the others were astounded by the panoramic view from the parking lot. I had forgotten how many big views there were on the way up to the ridge. The view from the overlook is simply spectacular. We had perfect weather with the start at 72 degrees and rising to the mid 80s on the way down.

Some notes: Dan and I tried to estimate the total ascent and distance and came up with 1,500 feet and 7+ miles. I clocked it at 1,200 ascent and just under 6 miles. My altimeter reckoned the ridge at 7,100 feet but we started at 6,200+ at the parking and ascended 1,200. There is virtually no descent on the way up so it is 7,100 +. Very high in any case.

The other highlight of the day was pizza at Denny's bar and Distillery in Etna. I had bragged about it being the best pizza this side of Napoli and all agreed. Dennys is a great restaurant and bar and highly recommended.

There were a lot of hikers on the trail and we gave a lift to 3 PCT hikers down to Etna. It was much appreciated as they had no cell service up there.

This hike will be regularly scheduled for Every Friday. It was a great hiking day.
