Porcupine Gap to Soda Mountain Lookout 5-8-13

The drive to the TH was interesting. Pilot Rock Road and BLM 40-2E-33 are in very rough shape. It took us 30 minutes to drive the 3.8 miles from Highway 99 to the TH (~7.6 MPH).

Temperatures were in the 50s and we started the day with our heads in the clouds. The cloud cover burned off fairly quickly and we enjoyed sun breaks before lunch. On the way up Soda we hit snow patches above 5,500', but nothing impassable.

We were on top by 12:30 and had views on both the California and Oregon sides, although we could not see Shasta. Rolling thunder started during lunch, which made us just a bit uncomfortable given our position.

We decided to head down the Soda Mountain access road to the old abandoned road back to the PCT rather than bushwhacking straight back down. This added a mile or so to the hike. However, we had forgotten about the coarse rock on the access road, which combined with the snow cover, made walking a bit of a challenge.

We didn't stop for refreshment on the way back because of the late hour. We were not back to Safeway until 4:30 or so.
