PCT - Porcupine Gap to Soda Mountain 2-11-15

Well, another nice day for a hike when we really should have been snowshoeing at this elevation. It warmed up from the mid-30s into the mid-40s with full sun in the morning giving way to high overcast in the afternoon.

The drive to the TH was about 45 minutes. The recent heavy rains have taken their toll on the road with the old large rocks beginning to resurface again, particularly on the portion of the road past the old borrow pit. The TH itself is now a nice mud bog.

We all visited Bigfoot's toilet before setting off on the PCT. We encountered lots of deadfall on the trail from the recent wind storms. In fact, there was more deadfall on the trail than we saw on the bushwhack segment up to the Soda Mountain fire lookout.

We had lunch at the lookout with nice views from Shasta to Thielsen. On the way back an unnamed hiker in the lead blew past the TH and was well on her way to Pilot Rock before we were able to reach her by phone and ask her to turn around. This delayed the start of the refreshment segment of the hike while we waited for her to return to the TH. We have decided to be more rigorous with our rule of the lead and sweep hikers being required to accept radios and to pass them on to others if their positions change.

Refreshments were taken at Callahan's.
