Wrangle Gap to Dutchman Peak 9-21-18

The objective of the hike was to see if there was a faster and easier way to hike to Dutchmen's Peak. The concept was to hike on the PCT from Wrangle Gap after bypassing Siskiyou Gap where we start the Big Red Mountain Hike, and continuing on Road 20. The good news is that there is a much faster way to get to Dutchman Peak. The bad news is that it is far from easier. Road 20 from Siskiyou Peak to Wrangle Gap is not for the faint of heart and high clearance and 4 wheel drive are recommended.

Having failed to find a better way Rich and I decided to continue driving on Road 20 to Dutchman Peak. We parked at the side of Road 20 with some fire fighters from an Indian Reservation in Northern Oregon, had a nice chat, then hiked the last 2 miles to the lookout.

It was a glorious day, very clear with a light breeze. The lookout tower now features some good maps and a sign in book. There were fabulous views down to the Red Buttes and really in all directions. I had forgotten what a tremendous viewpoint it is but it was the first time I arrived there without a hot sun beating down at 90 plus degrees after a considerable ascent from Donomore Meadows. Rich forgot his famous walking stick and had to scale the heights again, for which he got extra credit. Rich without that stick would be like Long John Silver without his crutch.

We determined we shouldn't tempt fate by going back to Wrangle gap and instead headed for Jacksonville on Road 20. That brought home how far and slow it is down Road 20, especially from near the top of the Peak. The first mile is narrow and steep, but child's play compared to Wrangle Gap.

So we didn't find the answer we were looking for, other than idle talk about helicopters and drones, so we repaired to Boomtown for refreshments. All in all the views were worth the trouble and Rich had never been up there at 7400 feet with a 360 degree view. .
