PCT - Mt. Ashland Ski Road to Grouse Gap 7-8-19

Photos by Bob

Monday's hike out to the Grouse Gap Shelter was ideal to escape both heat in the Rogue Valley and snow at higher elevations. While temps in Ashland reached the mid 80s, temps on the PCT on Mt Ashland didn't go beyond the mid 60s. And while recent hikes have been interrupted or rescheduled because of late snow on the trail, today's hike was clear of snow all the way out to the shelter.

It was a beautiful day with lots of color provided by fields of wildflowers along the way for our 12 hikers to enjoy. Red Garlic Gilia and Columbine, Orange Indian Paint Brush, Blue Forget-me-not and Shirts & Skirts, Purple Penstemons, and White Geraniums and Cow's Parsnip to name a few.

We saw many hikers out on the trail including some Through Hikers and Alex and Lillian out exploring the flowers. We arrived at Grouse Gap Shelter at 11 am after a brisk walk along the trail. And relaxed with a leisurely lunch. A guy with a red Jeep took our group shot so we could finally get Bob in the photo.

We took it easy heading back so we could listen to Ranger Liz identify more flowers.

A bunch of us stopped at Caldera for post hike refreshments.

Stay tuned for rescheduled hike information.
