Siskiyou Gap to Siskiyou Peak 7-30-14

Photos by Dan and Lynn

Started out in the mid-70s under a cloudless sky. By lunch atop Siskiyou Peak it had warmed up into the mid-80s, but the clouds began rolling in and it never got any hotter. We saw rain to the west, but except for a few drops right after lunch we stayed dry.

We saw 4 PCT thru hikers today. boB (yes, thats right, the last letter is upper case to differentiate him from Bob who is also doing the PCT this summer) has been banging out 30 to 35 mile-days from the Mexican border but is now looking forward to a couple of days off in Ashland to rest and recharge. We met another, separate male thru hiker, at the FS 20 / FS 22 junction where he was coming down the road rather than taking the PCT to shave off 0.7 miles from Siskiyou Gap. And we saw two women who were headed to Calahan's where one was going to stop while the other continued on north.

Our apres hike plan was to head to the Caldera Tap house outside deck unless it was too hot or too rainy in Ashland in which case our Plan B was to go to the Black Sheep. As we came back into town we enjoyed a terrific lightning show and could see the rain coming. So three cars ended up at the Black Sheep while the fourth car was evidently oblivious and went to the Caldera Tap House. You can see their photo below enjoying an outsized order of fries.
