Seven hikers caravaned the 18 miles up from Talent to the TH at Siskiyou Gap for our hike up the PCT to Big Red Mountain. Our surprise eighth hiker texted that he would meet us somewhere on the mountain. The skies were partly cloudy and cool with temps going from 40s to 50s.
A man with two small dogs asked us to let the two women hikers know on the trail that he was waiting for them. OK I said and we did. The first woman was carrying a large rock.
Our hike went from 5,880' at the TH to 7,030 at the summit. The cool winds were refreshing, and the wildflowers were plentiful and special, especially the 3-4 foot tall Bear Grass. We took our time enjoying the different flowers as we moved up the trail towards the summit. When we finally reached the point on the trail to start bushwacking up to our lunch spot, it seems we took four different routes up. On top we were greeted by John Kerr, our eighth hiker who rejoins the Monday hiking group after a long quarantine. The views of Shasta and surrounding mountains were spectacular!
It was a hike enjoyed by all, and after some of us stopped by the Growler Guys.
Cheers, Rich
