PCT East From Soda Mountain Road 6-14-17

Photos by Bob and John

This was a one-off hike for Monday hikers to see the flowers I had discovered the previous week on the PCT. We discovered 5 different flower varietals in the first hundred yards. Unfortunately we had no flower experts with us so to some extent we were unable to name the flowers, however most of us didn't care so long as they were there.

A few miles down the trail I noticed a large hill to the right and deduced from the map that it had to be Little Pilot Peak. Up to our right were rock formations but no trail. Your hardy AHG hikers bushwhacked their way up through the woods to a meadow and of course found a trail up the hill in open ground. Note for future hikers: The rocks are not visible from the trail across the meadow before the woods. Look for the first and only high hill to the right a few miles along and go up through the meadow. We left a stick with the direction written on it.

We were astounded by the view from Little Pilot Peak. You reach the summit and a sheer cliff, thinking it will be a humdrum view and find yourself with one of the best views in Oregon. Shasta and Mount Eddie on the left, Pilot Rock straight ahead and McGloughlin behind you. So here is our amateur list of flowers:

lupine, biscuit root, paint brush, larkspur, wild strawberry, phlox, grand polemonium?, tarweed, popcorn flower, phacelia?, Solomon, wild onion, trillium, corn lily. There were several others but it is too embarrassing to say what we called them. Ignore my spelling mistakes as this is done after two glasses of good wine. Carol Mockridge also identified  a selection of birds and nearly wiped us all out trying to see one. One rare woodpecker had everyone excited but he was there in sound only.

Perfect weather and a do again we will repeat on a Monday in the fall.
