Hyatt Lake to Greensprings Summit 8-20-18

Twelve hikers showed up at Rite Aid celebrating blue skies and moderate air. We were off to the Greensprings for a redo of our April 30 hike which featured a path covered in snow. Conditions were much improved with no snow, temp's in the 60s and 70s and breathable air!

We parked a shuttle car in the lot across from the Soda Mountain Road and continued up Highway 66 to a left at the Greensprings Inn for the 3 miles to the PCT trailhead south of Hyatt Lake. We were on the trail by 9:45 and made our lunch spot by noon.

Along the way we met several through hikers who had been delayed by all the recent wildfires. Little Hyatt Lake was beautiful, full and flowing over the dam. We made our rest stop for lunch at the "19 person log", since we were only 12 we had plenty of room. Although our air was good our normal view of the Siskiyous was obstructed in smoke.

After lunch things got a little strange. As we were walking down the PCT a woman in a truck on the side road stopped and asked us if we had seen a horse. NO we all said. But she went on to say the horse's name was Shadow a painted pony and very gentle. Great so we continued on thinking about Shadow and what we do if we found him.

And guess what, a little on we found him! He was on the other side of a barb wire fence. Jerry and Bob went up to the fence and fed Shadow a half apple and some carrots. While some of us were petting his nose brave Jeff came through an opening in the fence and ran a nylon rope through Shadow's bridle.

Then he led the horse through the opening and down the PCT for about half a mile until we came to a road that led up to a ranch where Hops were being grown for Caldera! A young man named Forest heard our cries and came out to see what was up. We asked if he knew a lady who was missing her horse and said he did and called her...Hooray! Eventually she showed up and we were able to finish our hike back to the shuttle car.

Most of us decided to head down to Caldera for beer and fries, especially since we saw Shadow being led by Forest up Highway 66 towards the Greensprings Inn!
