Gumboot Lake TH to Devils Pocket on the PCT 9-24-14

The drive to the TH was 1:40 with the final 6 miles or so a nice climb, all on pavement, beside the South Fork of the Sacramento River.

We didn't see any of the forecast rain, but we did have gusty winds with temperatures in the high 40s to low 50s. In the morning we were completely in the clouds with visibility typically about 100 yards. To get out of the wind we had lunch just below the crest of the saddle above Devil's Pocket. Given the overcast, temperature and wind conditions it was, of course, a Hank lunch.

We headed back after lunch and the clouds began to lift a bit giving us glimpses of the lakes on either side of the ridge.  However, we never did see any of the promised mountain top vistas.

This was a very unusual out and back hike for us since it was seemingly uphill in both directions.  We may put it back on the schedule next year as a new hike again because we saw so little of it today.

On the way home we took our refreshment sitting outside at the Goat.
