PCT Across Brown Mountain 5-18-16

Photos and Tracks by Gary and Dan

We might have put this hike on the schedule a few weeks too early.  Yes, there was snow in spots on the trail, but that wasn't the problem. The problem was deadfall.

When we arrived at the Summit Sno-Park we met the Fremont-Winema National Forest Service trail clearing team that was preparing to head north on the PCT towards Mt. McLoughlin. We, on the other hand, were unfortunately headed south where there hadn't yet been any trail clearing this season. So, lots of deadfall necessitating going over, under and around. We were moving on trail for 6+ hours, which is at least an hour longer than this hike has taken in the past.

Otherwise, we had a beautiful spring day with temperatures climbing from around 50oF to almost 70oF. We did the shuttle via DIM and 140 instead of FS-700.  The shuttle took about 25 minutes one-way.

We decided to forgo refreshments after the hike because we didn't get back to the Summit Sno-Park until around 4:30.

We left a shuttle car at the trail head a mile or so from Mile 26 on Dead Indian and started our hike from the Summit Snow park on Hwy 140. In the parking lot we met a crew about to do some trail clearing and they certainly had a task ahead of them. This section of the normally hiker-friendly PCT was littered with deadfall and a 10.5 mile walk in the park became a 6 hour slog. Nevertheless AHG conquered the obstacles on a near-perfect day for hiking. Because of the delays from deadfall we called it a day and headed straight home after completing the shuttle. Lesson learned was to leave this hike until late summer. Most of the hike is PCT and by then it is cleared to help the through hikers.
