Wards Fork Gap on the PCT 10-22-14

The drive to the TH was 1:50 including a 5 minute stop to consult our hand-held GPS units to make sure that we were on the correct road. This area is crisscrossed with multiple old logging roads, only some of which are signed.

The temperature warmed up from the high 40s into the low 50s, but the real weather news was the fog and wind. The trail runs mostly along the ridge and the views were mostly undescribable since we were in the fog for most of the hike.

The wind picked up as we crossed some of the more exposed areas, but the fog held right in there. We stopped for lunch in a sheltered copse of trees a bit before noon and about 2 miles shy of our original destination. Given the weather conditions, we decided to declare victory and head back to the cars after lunch.

We had a break in the weather on our way back so that we could see Shasta and Black Butte at one point, but that was the exception for the day. We had a bit of a wander as we drove back down to the valley floor, trying an alternative route. We used a combination of GPS units, dead reckoning and coin flips to guide us; but we eventually made it down.

Refreshment was taken at the Ruch Cafe.
