Overnight to Brookings / Crescent City 10/23-24/17

Photos by Bob, John and Rich

Our convoy headed for Brookings where we reserved for 15 at the Catalyst Restaurant. Catalyst is a fishing boat that owns a restaurant, rather than the other way around. We spoke with the company fishermen before lunch.

We moved on to Lone Ranch Beach where we spilt into two groups, the Hiker Group and the Groupie group. The Hiker Group mounted the high bluffs north of the beach and climbed up to and past the House Outlook, about 800 feet vertical climb. The views are much like Big Sur from the summit. They also had to make their way over a creek, which was a balancing act. The Groupie Group toured Lone Ranch Beach where the surging tide provided a spectacle as it crashed through the huge rocks.

Monday night started with Happy Hour at the Good Harvest, followed by dinner. It was quite a party and was helped on by the $2 draft beer at Happy Hour.

On Tuesday, Nancy Driscoll led the Hiking Group of 7 down the California coast 20 miles south of Crescent City. They pulled in at the Lagoon Creek parking, crossed the bridge and got on the Coastal Trial south towards the mouth of the Klamath River. Weather was mild, and parts of the trail were shaded. Green was featured all around us with lush ferns and moss in the old growth rain forest. At one point Nancy said it looked like Jurassic Park and Rich began to imagine his co- hikers as dinosaurs. Some may have resembled them after the party the night before.

There were spectacular views of waves splashing rocks from the trail and they heard the barking of sea lions and saw many banana slugs along the way. One sweet couple curled up on a leaf we named Yin and Yang. There were many overlooks approaching the Klamath. And Rich found an overlook with a parking lot 4 miles from where they had parked.

A plan has started to formulate for our next trip to the coast in May. A one way 4.5 mile jaunt on the Coastal Trial by the whole group and then a next day hike in the Redwood Forest on the Boy Scout trail for the Hiking Group.

The Groupie Group did a 5 mile walk on the beach past Point George in Crescent City. They then stopped for pictures at a few outlooks along Pebble Beach Drive and at the lighthouse. After a few fish purchases near the docks they headed towards home. A few decided to detour for a walk in Stout Grove as one passenger had not been there. Then lunch at Taylors Sausages in Cave Junction where our remaining hikers drifted in for a couple of hours.

The Overnight was again a grand success and we found a few good new hikes to do next year, around both Brookings and Crescent City.
