Coast Overnight 1/13-14/22

Photos by Sunny

We left early on Thursday to get to the coast in time for a good hike that day. Rich had sent me Randy's comments on the condition of the hike to the Klamath River so we headed north and hiked from Whale beach to Indian Sands. The trail was in good condition but it started to rain, lightly for the most part but picking up later.

The views along the way were magnificent, with huge waves crashing in the mist. The views at Indian Sands and just after were simply sensational. We found a sort of natural tunnel and had lunch, protected from the rain. There was quite a bit of ascent throughout the hike and a bit of a steep climb to gain the highway at the turnoff for Indian Sands. At this point we decided to do a mile down the road rather than 3 miles back along the trail, where we would have been thoroughly drenched.

Oddly enough, the rain stopped entirely as we reached the turnoff for Lone Ranch Beach so we stopped and walked a mile down the beach. Afterwards we headed south and checked into the Curley Redwood in Crescent City. We were delighted to find the motel had been upgraded somewhat and as spotless as ever. At $65 a bargain indeed. We did a good tour of the fishing harbor which was very lively, with many boats heading out that night.

We had dinner at the upstairs bar at the Good Harvest. The food was excellent and the bartender even better.

Friday morning we had an early breakfast and headed for the Boy Scout Trail in the sun. The redwoods were as majestic as ever and we did about 1 1/2 miles before running into deep mud we could not avoid. So we turned back early after taking some great pictures and made our way for lunch at Taylors in Cave Junction. A great overnight.
