Betty Lowes

Betty at Takelma Gorge in 2015

I decided we should honor Betty Lowes after her sudden death and the ideal place was where she last hiked and centered on the rock she last sat on. Hobart Bluff has lots of space to stay socially distanced and of course, magnificent views.

Initially expecting 10 hikers might come, the response was more like 25, with another 20 simply unable to come. Paul Lowes, Betty's son. arrived with wife Patrice and their two boys and I led them up the trail. With the help of Rich and Jeff, we sent people up the trail, well spaced out, and everyone scattered over the large space, keeping their masks on. I placed Betty's last picture on the rock where it was taken.

Paul told us about his family and his Mom and how loved she was. We then went from person to person and everyone talked about their friendships with Betty and some anecdotes from hiking and/or the North Mountain Park garden, or from other connections, like the Sansons' personal connection. A number mentioned their dogs that Betty had won over as a sitter and Jeff told us how Betty had befriended their large cat, George, by bribing him with fresh tuna.

It was an eye opener to learn how many of our hikers had relationships with Betty outside of hiking. Notable attendees were Alex, who started Betty hiking in 2012, Nancy Bringhurst who hiked with her back then, and Irene who became a close friend when they hiked with their "pups".

The Family were touched to learn about Betty's many friendships and to cap things off, Patrice told us about what a wonderful mother-in-law she had.  Liz produced flower petals and they were scattered over the cliff.

On the way up to the bluff I wondered whether I had bitten off a bit too much with 25 people but it was well worth it and we all appreciated the opportunity to pay our respects properly. The Lowes Family certainly will not forget the moment and the chance to meet Betty's friends and learn how much we all liked her, on the site of her last hike and her last picture on a hike.
