Union Peak 8-24-16

Six of us started our hike in mid 60 degree weather and no smoke.  It was a great day for one of my top 10 favorite hikes in Southern Oregon.  In our first hour on the PCT, before we made the turn onto the Union Peak trail, we saw 11 PCT thru hikers heading to Mazama Village at Crater Lake for a meal, shower and to resupply, along with 5 shorter distance hikers.

One pair of PCT hikers figured out that we were the “Wednesday Ashland Hiking Group” and there was much discussion from them about the “lost hiker from the Monday group.”  This couple had hiked 52 miles from the time they met the Monday group on the PCT near the Highway 140 Summit Sno-Park, until they met us, which was about 1 1/2 days. It is such a small world, especially considering that they were from Florida and Australia.

Lunch was taken on top of Union Peak with excellent views from Mt. Shasta and Mt. McLoughlin to Mt. Bachelor and Diamond Peak.  Lost Creek Lake/Reservoir and the Crater Lake area were also clearly seen.

Refreshments were taken at Lake of the Woods Lodge, where the weather was ideal for sitting outside and recharging our batteries.
