Union Peak 7-24-19

Photos by Barry H., Keeley and Nanci

Seven of us headed north to the Crater Lake area to climb to the top of Union Peak.  The temperature was perfect for hiking (low 60’s at the start and high 70’s to finish), the sky was clear and off we went on our hike.  We met a few PCT hikers along the way and crossed a few patches of snow, but the trail to the base of the peak was in good shape.  However, the mosquitos were very hungry, so it was good the group had sprayed with repellent.

The last 1.25 miles up the face of Union Peak is steep, with switchbacks as short as 4 feet.  In the past the trail has been relatively stable, but today, it seemed loose and crumbly.  However, everyone made it to the top and we had a relaxing lunch.  The views are unobstructed on top - from Mt. Shasta and Mt. McLoughlin to Mt. Scott, Mt. Bailey and Mt. Thielsen. We welcomed a new Wednesday hiker who just moved here after living in Italy for 16 years.

After a relaxing lunch, we headed back to the cars and made a slight detour into Crater Lake Park to take some quick refreshments before heading back to Ashland.  It was a long day, arriving back in Ashland around 5:45 PM.
