Upper Table Rock 4-15-19

Photos by Alice, Francie and Rich

" It's cold!" was John's greeting at the Rite Aid parking lot. As we all prepared for the day's hike with layers and rain gear it should be noted that the parking lot is becoming well known as one of the coldest spots in Jackson County.

Our hearty group fit comfortably into John's car once he revealed a secret seat for Betty in the back. And off we shot up I-5 towards Upper Table Rock. The rain held off until 11 am and we warmed up by taking the aerobic hike up to the top of the mesa. We saw most of the same flowers from Friday's Lower Table Rock hike (see Friday Wildflower Walk write-up),  as well as the ones shown below. On the way up we spotted today's new finds; Blue Camus and Pussy Ears. Liz also got a call from Francie who had just missed us back in Ashland, and she drove up and caught up with us on the trail.

With temps in the 40s and 50s we proceeded on Meadowlark Lane (aka the trail). About half way along it started to rain and we were glad for our rain gear. Many parts of the trail were soggy and those of us with water proof shoes were fortunate. John guided us through the vast meadow to the radio station that's used for airplane guidance. I took over for the final stretch past Frog Pond which had become Frog Lake and out to the view (?) of Sam's Valley.

Since it was wet and raining and since Liz had suggested lunch at Mazatlan Grill we turned around, and with new-found energy, beat a path back down the trail to the cars.

Lunch at Mazatlan was warm and wonderful!
