Stein Butte 11-25-15

Photos by Jim and Dan

Because we had a possibly challenging weather forecast and because it was the day before Thanksgiving, we decided to limit this hike to 3 participants; one each from Ashland, White City and K'Falls. But, it turned out that the weather wasn't so bad. Temperatures were in the high 30s and low 40s and we had intermittent sun breaks.

As usual, when you arrive at the trailhead and it's nippy, we all added layers before starting up the trail. And, as usual, it wasn't long before those layers came off. We spent most of the day between between two cloud layers; one toping out at 3,000' and the other above 4,000'. Not much snow below 2,500' and only a dusting above that with perhaps and inch or two in open areas near the lookout. The trees were quit lovely in areas where they were sugared with snow.

We had a quick lunch at the lookout with only occasional very hazy sun before starting back down. It warmed up on the downhill and we had more and more sun as we got back closer to the trailhead.

Applegate Lake is still looking quite empty.
