We had 13 hikers join together to hike Stein Butte on a cold morning with the temperature around 28 degrees. This hike starts uphill so by mile one we stopped to do some wardrobe adjustments.

We continued up the trail through a mixed conifer forest. Before reaching the saddle, we encountered a little bit of snow. It was the first time for Erin and for Jay to be on this hike and they enjoyed the views of all the snow covered mountains. We took our packs off for a small snack break.

A warm breeze was blowing and more wardrobe changes were in order. We continued along and made the turn towards the top of Stein Butte. The last part of the trail gains over 100 feet in the last 0.20 of a mile.

We enjoyed our lunch at the top and viewed the beauty of the Red Buttes and the Siskiyou Crest. After a long time relaxing, we headed back to our cars. The temperature was much warmer than when we started. When we got in the cars, the outside temperature was 53 degrees. When we returned to Jacksonville the temperature was 42 degrees.
