Little Grayback Trail to Squaw Peak 5-29-19

The Good: It was a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures starting in the low 50s and ending in the low 70s.

The Bad: We had poison oak up to 4,300'. And, not just a little poison oak here and there, we had spectacularly healthy poison oak everywhere encroaching on the trail. Sometimes we had what must be old growth poison oak; more than head high and hanging over the trail.

The Ugly. Yes, Little Grayback is another name for a tick. The kind and gracious hike leader offered to lead and sweep up any hungry ticks. He was successful in acquiring 5. The other 3 hikers scored 3 ticks total between them.

It was about 3 hours up to the lookout where we had a leisurely lunch. On the way down we passed a young couple and a dog in a truck headed up to the lookout to spend the night. The Squaw Peak lookout is now available for overnight stays. It is pretty basic; one cot, one outhouse, and a board on top of some boxes for a table.

We decided to forgo Boomtown so that the hike leader could go home for a tickectomy.

And, for those of you still wondering, the small, woody, leaf-like slats on pine and fir cones are known as scales.
