Pilot Rock 6-3-15

Photos by Dan, Jim W. and Ron

Pretty interesting day. We started with 13 people at Haggen's but lost one who needed to return home to attend to a medical issue and gained two who caught up with us on Pilot Rock after missing us at Haggen's.

High overcast with temperatures in the 50s in the morning and when we got to Pilot Rock it was enveloped in heavy fog. Only 2 of our hikers summited while the rest of us had lunch at the base of the summit trail. As we were finishing lunch the wind came up and cleared the summit but also dropped the wind chill factor to an unpleasant level for early June.

The new switchback trail is a nice improvement over the old logging road which went straight up to the old rock scramble below the summit trail. Now the approach is a series of switchbacks with stone steps placed appropriately.

Once down from Pilot Rock the weather was quite sunny and agreeable for our return to the TH via the meadow. We could see Black Butte and a bit of Eddy through the clouds but didn't see Shasta or McLaughlin at all today.

Refreshment was taken at Callahan's where they have taken side order fries off the menu but agreed to meet our needs today with four large platters of fries.
