Ostrich Peak 1-7-15

We had an interesting day. Since 2001 we have been doing the Ostrich Peak loop in a CCW direction. Today, we decided to break out of that paradigm by doing it CW. This generally worked well except for the two folks that were in the lead that missed the turn from FS 2060 onto the Mystical Connector trail and instead headed on up towards Horn Gap. But it turned out OK. Although we didn't know exactly where they were we stayed in radio contact and everybody made it back to the TH at about the same time.

Just a gorgeous day. The temperature was in the low 50s upon arrival at the TH but it warmed up as we ascended above the inversion layer which continued to blanket the Medford end of the valley all day. We had great views to the north over the fog to McLoughlin at 29 miles, Scott at 63 miles, Bailey at 73 miles and Thielsen at 75 miles.

It was close to 70oF at our usual lunch spot. After an Annie lunch it was difficult to get going again.

We had hoped to sit outside for refreshment after the hike but found that when we got back to the TH that it was still only in the low 50s down in the valley. So, instead, we sat inside at Standing Stone.
