Ostrich Peak 1-2-19

Photos by Francie and Keeley

Ten of us headed up to Hitt Road in Ashland to hike to the top of Ostrich Peak for our first hike of the year.  We had clear skies and high 30’s degree weather.  The trail was mostly clear, but this trail goes up the entire time.

There was much evidence that the fire breaking efforts had cleared most of the undergrowth and the results were waiting to be burned when the time was right.  We did encounter a few frozen puddles along the way.  Wagner Butte was visible as we continued our trek up the hill.  Lunch was in the sun and for the first time for me, we saw Mt. McLoughlin from the top of Ostrich Peak.  It appeared they had cleared a few trees for a better view, or my memory is getting fuzzy.  Either way, we had a great Maria lunch (i.e., long) and Liz brought holiday chocolates for all that was delicious.

After our hike back to the trailhead, several of us went to Caldera for refreshments.  It was a good first hike of the year.
